Shashi Bahuguna

The Master Oogway who has already attained “inner peace” with contagious enthusiasm. She’ll try anything and convince others to try it as well. Get an 80 year old Grandpa to trek with his 5 year old Grandkid, check; get a 50+ year old lady to learn the basics to mountaineering on an expedition, double check.

Shashi is a child of the mountains born in a quaint little village nestled in the lap of the Kumoun Himalayas of Uttarakhand. A through Pahari both by birth and nature, climbing and trekking is second nature to her.

Coming from an Army background her father always encouraged her to indulge and excel in outdoor sports from an early age. That love for sports inculcated by him led her to take up various activities like swimming, horse riding, gymnastics and athletics. But her sport of choice was Hockey and she was selected to play for the National team at the age of 13 in Class 8.

She graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree from DAV (PG)  College  in Dehradun and worked with Kotak Mahindra Bank in Delhi for many years. She also taught Computer Science at ATS Computer Centre in Dehradun.

Excelling at sports was in her  blood so when her husband took her on a trek to Nag Tibba soon after their marriage she  discovered a new horizon and a passion for the mountains.

This was back in 2004 and since that first official trek she has not looked back.  And over the next few years she spent as much time as she possibly could in the mountains both in the Himalayas and in the Sahyadris. She has also done many treks in the UK. She went to Dodital and Dayara, Everest Base Camp, Kedartal, Tapovan-Nandanvan and many more in those first few years. She has done a plethora of day treks that would fill more than just one blog page!

She did her Basic and Advance Mountaineering courses as well as her Search and Rescue course from the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering between the years 2010 and 2012. She attempted Mt Bandarpoonch (6316mts) with her advance course. She has also been on expeditions to Mt Bhagirathi II (6512mts) twice in 2013 and in 2015, Mt Rudugheira (5819mts) in 2013, Mt Bandanviti, Mt Thelu (6001m) in 2016, Mt Gangotri III (6577m) in 2017 on which she was the leader of the expedition and most recently Mt Nanda Ghunti (6309m) in 2018.

Shashi is also an Open Water certified Scuba Diver and has done several dives in the Indian Ocean and has successfully completed her Basic and Advance diving courses. She has completed a Basic Skiing Course from the Pandit Nain Singh Surveyor Mountaineering Training Institute, Munsyari and her Intermediate Skiing Course from the Snow School in Gulmarg.
